A 54-year-old man, Benjamin Acquaa, is in the grips of the Assin South District police for allegedly killing his two-day-old daughter for contracting a syphilis infection.
According to the Assin South District Police Commander, DSP Okyere Andam, the suspect, who had worked in the hospital before, went through the folder of the newborn and after realizing that she has been infected with syphilis, ostensibly took her from his wife, Felicia Akese, to cuddle.
“A few minutes later, the suspect came back with the baby, fully wrapped in a cloth with an explanation that she is dead and so he wants to go and bury her, “DSP Okyere Andam said.
After several minutes of disagreement between the couple, the wife complied under duress but later lodged a complaint with the police.
The police revealed that the suspect went to Assin Kyinso Cemetery to bury the child but changed his decision when he noticed his wife had followed him. He opted to bury the baby in his backyard.
DSP Okyere Andam said a thorough search at Assin Kyinaso was conducted by his men but the corpse was not found.
According to him, the suspect in an attempt to distract investigators said the child was thrown into a toilet facility in the area.
The incident happened in November 2020 but the wife of the suspect, Felicia Akese, reported the case three days ago at Assin Darmang Police Station which eventually led to the arrest of the suspect.
He has since been remanded into police custody for further investigation.
