The chairman of the Turkish Geothermal Association (TGA), Orhan Mertoglu, has stated that Turkey ranks first in the world for the area of greenhouses with geothermal heating.
“Turkey is among the top 5 countries in the world in terms of geothermal resources. Our country ranks 4th in the production of geothermal electricity and 1st in geothermal heating of greenhouses, ”he said.
Currently, the area of geothermal greenhouses in Turkey is 500 hectares. Leadership among Turkish cities is held by the city of Afyon-Karahisar (pictured), where 70 hectares of geothermal greenhouses are located.
“However, we still have a lot of unrealized potential. Currently, our geothermal potential is about 4,500 megawatts, and the current capacity is about 1,600 megawatts.
We also have 60,000 megawatts of geothermal thermal potential. It is a cheap energy source that provides heating 70% cheaper, said Orhan Mertoglu.
“Investment costs for geothermal facilities range from US $ 2,000 to US $ 40,000 per unit, which is slightly higher than investment costs for wind energy, but the efficiency of geothermal facilities is much higher.”
